Teaching American History Using Core Knowledge

A series of five workshops will be presented to help teachers learn how to infuse Core Knowledge pedagogy when teaching American History. Each workshop will have a theme. A summary of each session follows:

   

April 28 -- Content Resources Lesson Plan
Using the theme of Native Americans: Culture and Conflicts teachers will enhance their content knowledge about the theme through explorations of content-rich Internet resources and other multimedia resources. They will explore Native Americans in several regions such as the Pacific Northwest, Northern/Southern Plains, the Southwest and the Eastern Woodlands. Teachers will become familiar with the Internet resources and tools they could use to enhance their lessons and participate in hands-on activities to practice these applications.. Teachers will create a Core Knowledge lesson using these resources and applications.

May 16 Content Resources Lesson Unit

Using the theme of the The Civil War, teachers will enhance their content knowledge about the theme through explorations of content-rich Internet resources and other multimedia resources. They will explore topics such as the Causes of the War, Slave Life and Rebellions, the Confederacy, Yankees and Rebels, the Emancipation Proclamation, Teachers will become familiar with the Internet resources, activities, and tools they could use to enhance their lessons and participate in hands-on activities to practice these applications. Teachers will create a Core Knowledge lesson using these resources and applications.

May 9 Content Resources Lesson Plan Template
Using the theme of the American Revolution: events that lead to the American Revolution, teachers will enhance their content knowledge about the theme through explorations of content-rich Internet resources and other multimedia resources. They will explore topics such as the Boston Teach Party, the Intolerable Acts and the French and Indian War. Teachers will become familiar with the Internet resources, activities, and tools they could use to enhance their lessons and participate in hands-on activities to practice these applications.. Teachers will create a Core Knowledge lesson using these resources and applications.
May 30 Industrialization & Rise of Urban America
Using the theme of the Industrialization and the Rise of Urban America, teachers will enhance their content knowledge about the theme through explorations of content-rich Internet resources and other multimedia resources. They will explore topics such as the Post-Civil War, The Condition of Labor, Big Business, Free Enterprise and important individuals of this era.Gettysburg Address as well as the studying some of the individuals and battles. Teachers will become familiar with the Internet resources, activities, and tools they could use to enhance their lessons and participate in hands-on activities to practice these applications. Teachers will create a Core Knowledge lesson using these resources and applications.

May 12 Content Resources
Using the theme of the The United States Constitution, teachers will enhance their content knowledge about the theme through explorations of content-rich Internet resources and other multimedia resources. They will explore topics such as the Preamble to the Constitution, Separation of Powers, Bill of Rights. Teachers will become familiar with the Internet resources, activities, and tools they could use to enhance their lessons and participate in hands-on activities to practice these applications.. Teachers will create a Core Knowledge lesson using these resources and applications.
